Drone surveying & mapping

Choose the survey specification before you choose the aircraft. Compare providers on accuracy, control, processing and the files your project actually needs.

Start with the right scope

A map that looks sharp is not necessarily accurate enough for design work. Share the site boundary, intended use, coordinate system and required tolerances. Ask the provider to explain how those requirements will be checked and evidenced.

Deliverables to agree

  • A survey extent and agreed coordinate reference system
  • Orthomosaics, point clouds or terrain and surface models
  • CAD or GIS files in your required formats
  • An accuracy or survey report where required by the brief

Four questions for your shortlist

  1. Is photogrammetry, LiDAR, a ground survey or a combined approach suitable?
  2. How will ground control and independent checkpoints be used?
  3. Will vegetation, water or obstructed areas affect the result?
  4. Are data processing, classification, drawings and revisions included?
Equipment specifications alone do not establish final survey accuracy. Compare the proposed method, validation and deliverables as a complete package.
