Drone Safe Register review & service guide

Finding local operators

Based on published provider information. We have not commissioned or tested this service.

The assessment in brief

Who should consider Drone Safe Register?

Drone Safe Register is a useful starting point if you want to discover local operators and compare their proposals yourself. The value is access to a choice of businesses, rather than one uniform survey product. Its directory and booking routes should be evaluated separately: establish which route you are using and who will be accountable for the finished work. Our assessment concerns the published service model; it is not a quality rating of every operator in the network.

Strengths to consider

  • Postcode-led discovery and operator browsing
  • Choice across creative and inspection services
  • Direct discussion with individual operators

What to check

  • Check each operator's relevant capability and deliverables.
  • Establish the contracting party for your chosen booking route.
  • Directory membership is not a substitute for reviewing comparable work.

These describe the focus of advertised services. They are not customer-satisfaction or tested-quality scores. “Not assessed” does not mean unavailable. How the criteria work.

Finding the right local operator

The main site provides an operator map and postcode-based quote requests. It also lets buyers explore different service categories. This approach may appeal to someone who wants to speak with several potential suppliers before choosing a particular combination of availability, experience and price for a local assignment.

Send the same brief to every shortlisted business. Include the location, purpose, deadline and exact files you expect to receive. Otherwise one operator may price a short flight while another includes editing or interpretation, making the apparent price comparison misleading. Review the portfolio that relates to your work rather than relying on a general showreel.

Using the network for roof inspections

The roof inspection page advertises residential and commercial capture, including roof and chimney imagery. Its emphasis is access to detailed aerial evidence. For a buyer, the useful follow-up is to establish how the selected operator turns that capture into something your roofer, property manager or other adviser can actually use.

Ask for an example of the proposed output before booking. Can you identify each roof slope and locate individual images? Will there be notes, a condition assessment or only files to download? If the purpose is an insurance discussion, ask the insurer or appointed adviser what evidence is required before defining the flight brief.

Directory enquiries versus online ordering

The separate online-ordering page describes fixed-price booking, managed data requests and optional post-production. Those are advertised features of that route, rather than proof that every directory enquiry includes the same package. Confirm that the service described is available for your location and requested output, and obtain the current booking terms.

For recurring work, nominate a single person to accept results and keep a record of the agreed specification. Clarify who resolves missing files, disputed scope or rescheduling. A directory can support an ongoing relationship with a chosen operator, but the arrangements for continuity, substitute pilots and escalation should be explicit rather than inferred from the network brand.

Pricing & getting a quotation

The website offers quote requests and separately describes fixed-price online ordering. Check which approach applies to your job. Ask each operator for a total covering the same capture, editing, reporting and delivery scope, plus travel and applicable VAT. Confirm any booking payment, cancellation charge and weather-rescheduling terms in writing before treating two quotes as equivalent.

For a consistent comparison, use our drone service cost guide and buyer’s checklist.

Questions to ask Drone Safe Register

  1. Am I contracting with the individual operator or through a managed booking service?
  2. Can this operator show a comparable completed deliverable, rather than only aerial footage?
  3. Who handles a postponed flight, incomplete data or a request to correct the delivery?
